NYC Makes PPE - Multimedia

NYC Makes PPE is an organization that has helped manufacture and distribute 150,000 pieces of personal protective equipment to people who needed it and couldn’t source or afford it. It began at the very start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 - a collaboration between Hack Manhattan, Fat Cat Fab Lab, Columbia UniversityCUNY colleges, NYC Resistor and dozens of volunteers. We even had people mail in their 3D printed PPE parts from Texas to Taiwan to help New Yorkers!

I helped make and post graphics since my specialty lays within media production – most of the volunteers were working on engineering applications but I still wanted to help, so I scoured the Discord to find behind the scenes pictures, videos, and CAD drawings to convert into social media posts that could promote fundraising. I worked alongside a few graphic designers to make professional-quality posts. I also spent some time assembling face masks for first responders.

Fun fact: my inhaler was used in the design of our inhaler spacer, which is a device that elongates the space between an albuterol inhaler and the patient’s mouth: the space allows the medication to aerosolize better.
